The Royal College of Art Contemporary Art Exhibition.

27/11/2007

The Royal College of Art is staging its annual Secret contemporary art exhibition later this month.
The show consists of around 2,500 original postcard-sized artworks made and donated by professional modern artists, as well as up and coming students.
The kink is that each card is old to the pubic in a huge sale, with every postcard costing £40, regardless of whether it has been made by Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin or one of the students.
The college says: “What’s the Secret? Each postcard is signed on the back, so buyers do not know the identity of the artist until they have made their purchase. Although it can help if you know the difference between a David Hockney and a Grayson Perry, a lot of it is down to pure luck and many buyers don’t realise whose work they have chosen.”
Many of the biggest names in modern art contribute to the student fundraiser. They span the spectrum of fine art from ceramics, canvas art, sculpture and photography and this year include Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry.
Other contributors include the designers Zandra Rhodes and Manolo Blahnik; Yoko Ono; the film director Mike Leigh; the Stone Roses guitarist John Squire, and the Wallace and Gromit animator Nick Park.
Potential buyers will be able to view all the postcards in person at the RCA in London or on-line at www.rca.ac.uk/secret from 16-23 November. All postcards go up for sale on Saturday 24 November at the RCA.
